Forwarding to the list as many people are trying to help me. Unfortunately, as I don't have a garage, I have pause this saga till next weekend. :(
Thanks to everyone who responded and those who thought about doing that. :) Happy New Year!
Konstantine.

Bingo! I just noticed that injectors are energized kind of sporadically. I observed sparks (same way you suggested), and at that time I did not catch anything strange. Only now I realized that I actually saw the same effect. Yes, my scope has 2 channels. I will read the article and try that. What usually causes a key to shear? Do I have another problem somewhere?
Thank you.

Konstantine,

It may help to check whether you have sustained sparking when you turn the engine over. You can remove the coil pack (the assembly of 5 coils), insert some spark plugs into the connectors, and lay the coil pack sideways on the engine with the shells of the plugs grounded to the block. Have someone else turn the engine over while you check for sparks. You should disconnect all of the connectors to the injectors to prevent flooding and for safety reasons.

It's possible that you have a sheared key on the sprocket of the front crankshaft pulley. This allows the camshaft to slip out of proper alignment with the crankshaft. The ECU requires proper alignment of the camshaft and crankshaft timing sensor outputs for the engine to start and run.
This problem is described at the following link:
http://www.picoauto.com/tutorials/audi.html
This article describes the problem with a 3B engine that has the hall sensor in a distributor. However, the same sheared key problem can occur in the AAN engine where the hall sensor is at a camshaft pulley.
If you have a 'scope with at least 2 channels, you can verify that the timing reference sensor pulse occurs within the "window" of the camshaft sensor pulse (as described in this article). A storage scope (analog or digital) would make this easier.

I had impression that ECU can not clear codes by itself. Another strange thing: code 2111 always blinks twice - as first one and second time as the last code? Is it normal?

>Dave, thank you. I have a few more questions. This is "no start condition". RPM/Crank position sensors are fine (checked resistance and observed signals with o-scope), fuel pump relatively new and is humming. I don't have fittings for this car to test fuel pressure, unfortunately. Stored codes are 2111,2112 (these are for rpm/crank position sensors) and 2113 (cam position sensor).

>2. I observed the signal from CPS on o-scope. Voltage is per spec but I can not swear that pulses make a pattern. I am not sure if that because started rotate engine with no constant speed. What is the usual symptom of the CPS failure? No signal at all or intermittent signals? Engine is catching a spark for a fraction of second and stalls.
