Hey John, thanks for the full report.  I am loving my bitch in the cold as
well - although not as cold or snowy as your experience this past week.  I
am going to replace the seeping rad and all hoses to keep it reliable this
wintry season.

As far as wipers, I don't know about contact except that the only true way
to keep good contact is new wiper arms (from Audi).  I researched it and
this is the only repeatable answer that comes up.  I will say that I only
use the PIAA silicone wipers.  I have for the past 18 months on all my cars
and I can't say enough good things about them.

You start by putting on the (supplied) RainX type coating.  After that the
silicone wipers maintain it indefinitely - I rarely need to use the wipers
with light rain even with year old blades.  The silicon does not deteriorate
in the sun and I have yet to replace any. I have about 18 months on my
oldest set and they still work great.  You do need to clean the blades from
time to time but that is it.  I get them at tirerack.com

Oh yea, I have Altimax on the bitch too and love'em.  Agreed - like Hakka 1
days...
