Having done a few engine swaps over the years, I agree with you. His
argument is pretty compelling though: you rebuild the head, restore
compression all around, and then apply some turbo pressure and the only
thing that can give is the rings. Compression in the other 4 cyls was from
135-145.

hmm. I'm not sure I'd write off a head rebuild, but maybe he's smarter than
I am.
swapping a long block in is a heckofalot more work and you still just end up
with a used motor.
