Thank you to all who responded.....for now, the fix was very simple.....a blown fuse of the wrong amperage.

Well, right after I sent out my question, I drove to a jobsite and it occurred to me that maybe I should check the fusebox, thinking that maybe the wiper will get power through the defroster somehow if the wiper fuse is blown.  Sure enough, there was a blown 15 amp fuse where a 20 amp should be, replaced the fuse with the proper 20 amp and viola', proper working rear wiper, defroster, etc.  This spring I will check out the rear wires, but the car only has 76K on it, so I would hope there has not been excessive wear in that area just yet.
