[s-cars] OEM vs 1.8T or LS2 coil prices

Perhaps I should have said the prices have moderated from their steep
climb. Although cheaper POS units are available, i.e. the $126.98
Beru unit at
www.bimmerspecialist.com, the 1.8t substitution is still much cheaper
for an entire system.
Much of the issue of the OEM units is the difficulty troubleshooting
when you only have a high speed miss. I don't agree that you can do a
satisfactory
troubleshooting job by running on 4 cylinders (3 when the bad coil
misfires). And, changing the coil is an involved process as well.
This leads many
to change all 5 coils and both POS units, which is an expensive
solution for sure.
You will just have to add up the costs of the 1.8t parts and harness
and any covers and factor in your comfort with the reliability of
those coils. I don't
think there is one good answer for everyone. The 1.8t coil system
costs less initially and is easier to troubleshoot and replace coils.
The LS2 system
may be the answer, and, like the 1.8t system, can be inexpensive if
you can fabricate the harness.
