If the car has been chipped, could it be the chips have ejected themselves
from the sockets? This has been reported in the past. I tie wrapped mine in
place.

Bill,

Just thought I would chime in because I experienced your exact symptoms
myself several years ago. A couple of months after having Anderson Motor
Sport guys upgrade my stock ECU to a MTM 1+, I started getting an occasional
stumble at freeway speeds. Then one day the car died suddenly (on the
freeway) but I was able to coast to an off ramp and into a parking lot.
Repeated attempts to start proved futile.

Car (95.5 S6 Avant) was flatbedded to my backup wrench because Anderson's
were filled. The mechanic assigned to the job did a fair amount of
sleuthing and discovered that the fault lay in the ECU box and not with the
CPS as other's diagnosed. He was able to start the car and reproduce the
"kill" by tapping on the ECU with a screwdriver handle.

Further investigation found a faulty MTM EPROM though it could be any loose
electrical connection in there. We replaced the chip and all was good.

PS And I did have to replace the CPS but not for some time after.
