[s-cars] radio memory saver?

I need to troubleshoot my alternator this weekend (to determine if I just
need the regulator assembly or a whole new/rebuilt alternator).
Disconnecting the battery is, of course, a prudent step to take before
messing with the alternator wiring.
However, not having my radio code handy, I have been pondering if there is
good solution to keeping power to the radio while the battery is
disconnected. I’ve seen those radio/ECU memory savers that appears to be
nothing more than a 9V battery clip connected to a lighter plug, but I
assume one would have to disconnect a lot of the other loads (such as
interior lights) for that gizmo to deliver sufficient voltage to the radio
to keep it from loosing its memory. There are other variations that use a
small 12V battery or wall-wart power supply.
I’ve thought about using a small 12V battery and alligator clips to supply
power to the radio thru the fuse panel. If I was able to pull the radio
fuse and inject power directly to the radio I could keep it happy while the
rest of the electrical system was completely de-energized.
Has anybody had any experience keeping the radio from going into safe mode
while the battery is disconnected?
