Bob - Excuse if  you covered this, but what do your coil wires look like
where they go under the cover? Have you fully inspected for insulation
cracks etc.? I'm convinced from seeing what happens to these with age that a
good few "bad coils" diagnoses are, well, not actually bad COILS... but the
also well-known (but often missed by non-UrS-fanatic mechanics) bad wiring
to the coil that has insulation cracks and shorts to ground.  Especially the
wire bends and corners are a much more likely place to be intermittent as
opposed to inside the coil itself (which would be more likely to be all or
nothing if the winding insulation fails).

By the way anybody who has junk 'bad coils' they want to mail me, I'd be
happy to have some to slap on a turns bridge I have to check the turns
ratio, and then tear down to see what the failure mode seems to be...
