I think the more obvious point here is that a guy asked for help diagnosing his car.? Discussing the finer points of differentiation between pre-ignition and detonation does absolutely nothing to further that cause.
Personally, I think our fellow lister is going to find 2 adjacent cylinders with low compression... if he can get past the white noise and pick up a gauge and do a simple test.? Then I think he's going to find a failed gasket between those 2 cylinders.? Quite likely, since this has been happening for a while, I think he's going to find a nice little groove burnt into his head between those 2 cylinders.
Until he runs this very basic test... which should have been his starting point... all of our conversation is purely speculative.
As far as Brett participating in any discussion... well, one must look at history.? He may not be reading every post, but makes a habit of reading the inane lines of discussion, and then picking bones with them.? Bottom line... the list would be far more peaceful if he avoided reading anything... up to and including any post by Pizzo.
That's my .02 based on 8 or 9 years on the S list.
Dave

From: Brett Dikeman <brett.dikeman at gmail.com> Thank you for reminding me why
I stopped reading s-car-list mail a month+ ago. -B
OK, Brett, I admit that I was I bit surprised when Taka dissed S car
ownership because you "couldn't get a window switch" or something like that.
Yeah, Taka, I guess them thar window switches are pretty rare. . .good thing
my AC and heat both work. No need to open the windows for now. LOL!
But don't give up on us Brett. I - at least - still appreciate your
"flavor". Even if others don't.
Hell, I'm just waiting for someone's car to break down so I can learn more
about repairing mine, rather than suffer through the current debate about
what makes a car "green" as if any car, anywhere could possibly be "green".
(Hint: get on a bike if you want "green" or better yet, walk. . .)
Tom '95 S6 Avant (home office + 6 bikes in the garage = as green as I'm
gonna get. In other words, I don't drive much, but when I drive, I want to
drive like HELL!).
