We had a local wrecking yard stuffed with cars and trucks from the '20s on
up - acres of vehicles spread over forested hilly terrain. Coolest yard in
the area. Then I needed a wheel from a '29 Dodge pickup - and they had
crushed everything and hauled it all away. Well, not everything - I found
the wheel I needed on an old chassis in a swamp, but they didn't leave much.
What a waste - the place was a treasure trove for old car aficionados. More
is changing than the exclusion of children from the yards. There are few
cars older than 10 years in most of the yards around here now.
Do your patriotic duty - get out there and BUY,BUY,BUY - new stuff only,
please! Must destroy the old stuff ... it's for the good of all....

Hah! I had this exact thought. I want to go and pick through a
junkyard (that's what they used to be called) to get some Audi bombs.
It is one of the big u-pull-it places and my son is not even allowed in
the gate at 8 years old.
I wanted him to experience what I experienced with my dad...trolling
through and climbing around smashed cars that may be 30-40 years old.
Just to poke your head in and check it out or sit in the driver's seat.
I loved it. Those days are gone I think. What a shame (on some level).

This whole thing sounds like the old car version of Farenheit 451 to
me. I'm immagining telling my son about when auto recyclers used to
save cars instead of destroy them...
