Duh, I guess I should have read more slowly... The 2079 IS the correct tool.

I was standing there with him when he was doing it. Do you have the correct tool for the AAN? He doesn't ... He's only the one for the other 5 cyl cars, although he has 20 yrs experience and is a factory trained Porsche and Audi Master tech. He used an impact wrench only after we couldn't figure out a way to make the other tool work, but I'm betting it was already gone.
I need to buy the tool I guess. They're awfully expensive tho.

I had a new gear on hand when I did the belt on my '92 a few weeks ago. Sure enough, I found a broken key. I did try removal of the bolt with my IR impact gun at one point (with the crank lock installed), but the bolt didn't budge. It only started to move when using the 2079, 3/4" drive breaker, every inch of a 6' cheater, and lots of effort.
The thing that makes me think the key was already broken is that the timing marks appeared to be ~1/2 tooth off on the cam originally, and are almost perfect with the new belt and pulley. The old belt wasn't loose or worn (7 years old, but less than 30K miles). I can't be sure, but the car seems to run a bit better now (that might also be due to the new *functional* thermostat). I'm familiar with the shop that the PO had do the previous belt change, and I wouldn't be surprised if they just blasted the bolt on with a gun.
