[s-cars] Cruise control failure

My classic Audi cruise-fix checklist goes in this order specifically:

1a. Vacuum lines especially in hot under-hood spots
1b. Stalk switch cleaning (easily disassembled but watch the tiny parts)
1c. Brake/clutch switches

2. Stalk switch wiring

5. Vacuum pump
6. Cruise module ("brain")

Numbered that way for a reason. I made the mistake of paying bad mechs at
least twice who insisted on replacing pump and/or module, which turned out
not to be the problem. Those seldom really go bad. It's almost always one of
the top 3/4.  If it's the stalk wiring it's a bit of a hassle but doable to
fix or replace.
