[s-cars] Tires, what else.

Hi Taka,

First off, thanks for the uber fast reply.
I must say, the Z started WAY better than my S4 did during the Jan / Feb hell freeze over we had, especially after sitting for a few months under a cover with out any attention. My S4 would have easily incurred a several hundred dollar start up bill.
The fittment is basically stock 225 up front 255 in the back 18" rims, as the way the economy is going the pot caverns up here will not be filled in until prolly August, 2012.
I think I will always come back to the german Auto side once I can find my P car, which might be looking better and better every day.

The tires are for street, and track use. I had contemplated some mag. rims and r compounds but I don't track enough. Maybe next year. I do want very sticky tires, and I would rather pay a hundred or 2 more now then buy some medicore crap. I loved my Yok's, but not sure what the best of them are anymore. Used to be a BS fan, could see a set of them.

What do you think is the best of the comprimise, I prolly will only do 5000 miles on the car and track once or twice this year.
The tire should heat fast and easily, as I tend not to track in the hot summer, but rather in fall. No idea why, justthe way it tends to always happen.

Thanks

Mark

  Mark-
Yes, I've used them- on my Miata, in 205/50R15.

  Pros- cheap, pretty good grip.
Cons- longevity (lasted all of 2 yrs. and 25k miles on a light car), wet performance past 1/2 treadwear (then hydroplaning becomes an issue), noise past 1/2 treadwear (tires become loud like mud terrain tires on a 4x4 truck)

I would look at these tires for your 350Z:

Bridgestone RE-11 (not the 01-R, but the latest tire from Bridgestone, supposed to be even better)
Nitto NT-05 (yeah, I know, Nitto isn't the best name out there, but these are supposed to be quite good and the -01 is a decent track tire)

This is purely for street use, right? BTW, the my current BS RE-01R are a league better than the Falkens- quieter, better dry and wet grip, better longevity- all coming from a narrower tire that puts down less tread width- 195 vs. 205.

I'm getting RE-11s for my next set. I'm probably going to get Kumho XS for the Vette, because BS doesn't make the right sizes in RE-11 or -01R, I'm not going to downgrade to RE-050 and the Michelins are probably going to be too cushy for the Vette, even though they're perfect for the V70R and other sports sedans and I don't have the $$$$ to run Pilot Sport Cup on the street like the GT-3 guys.

Also, I imagine you're running stock sizes, right? Not some crazy fitment with dished JDM wheels- not going to convert you to the Eastern side, are we?
  :-)

  Taka

    Noted Tire Guru's,

Not to start a 4Meg thread on tires or anything, but need some feedback on Falken RT615 tires.
Not for the Audi, but for a 350Z (yeah yeah, I know waste of money).

Anyone used these in the past ?
Any recomendations as to the pro's / con's etc.?

    Thanks

    Mark
