The Eisenmann exhaust for my e38 740i sport is $2000. And it's only
cat back! This puts me into the "I'm going to do a custom job and
spend less $$" bracket, which I never thought I'd be in.

Jeff,
Clown? I think spending $1700 on an exhaust for a $5000 car would make
me a clown. JC was right, I just asked about how Stromungs were
obtained. I remember seeing posts about gathering orders for the system
leading me to believe that they were not available all the time. Excuse
me for inquiring.
But since you opened the dialogue, $1700 is just plain too much. It is
an old Audi, not a Ferrari. So what if its better than a Borla, Brullen
or whatever. The differences are minor and I could care less. My car
is a dd and I (as some other folks here) will not realize the minor (if
any) performance gains over another aftermarket exhaust.
So I don't see the value in your holier than God exhaust system, BFD. I
did not put it down in any way (until now - cost).

Dave, I think you gotta realize this post mortem equine has had foot
repeatedly applied to it on this List over sooooooo many years - Jeff's
reply was 'to the point'.
You want $$$? Price a Ferrari exhaust. Or heck even a BMW system for
Eisenmann. Try $5-7k (or more). Suddenly $1,700 (which they're not
btw) is a "bargain". It's def. not so much about perf. gain as it is
aural / aesthetic. Spool up / flow is added benny.
Remember, this is the S-Car-List - we're gentlemanly here.
