Everyone is following BMW
M<http://www.automotive.com/used-cars/11/bmw/m/index.html>,
Ford <http://www.automotive.com/new-cars/01/ford/index.html> SVT, and
Mercedes-Benz<http://www.automotive.com/new-cars/01/mercedes-benz/index.html>AMG
into the factory-offered performance-model game.
Volvo <http://www.automotive.com/new-cars/01/volvo/index.html> is doing the
same with its R Line: the
S60<http://www.automotive.com/2009/09/volvo/s60/index.html>R sedan and
V70 <http://www.automotive.com/2009/09/volvo/v70/index.html> R sport wagon.
The approach is similar to that of other manufacturers: Upgrade engine,
handling, and braking performance in well-balanced amounts; add luxury
accessories; make it look sporty inside and out; and sell in limited enough
quantity to ensure an element of exclusivity.
Volvo has reworked its inline-five-cylinder engine by adding a twin-intercooled
KKK turbo, revised engine-management and exhaust systems, and other tweaks.
The result is an impressive 300 horsepower from 2.5 liters. Take your choice
between a five-speed Geartronic automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
R Line Volvos are equipped with standard full-time all-wheel drive,
employing a Haldex differential to monitor traction and distribute power
front to rear. Besides aggressive 18-inch performance rolling stock, the
chassis benefits from driver-adjustable damping (Comfort, Sport, and
Advanced settings) and Brembo brakes. Dynamic Stability Traction Control,
which is driver-defeatable, and ABS are standard.

To make the R, Volvo did thorough rework on the cast-aluminum DOHC 20-valve,
2.5-liter turbocharged in-line five that is the 208-hp base engine of the
new XC90 sport-ute. "To get 300 horsepower out of 2.5 liters, you need a lot
of air," says Lars Johansson, engine project leader. So Volvo swapped the
XC90's low-pressure Mitsubishi turbo for a larger KKK unit with peak boost
doubled to 15.2 psi. The air flows in a lower-restriction cleaner down
through the turbocharger and two intercoolers and then across the top of the
engine in a large hydroformed aluminum pipe. Reground camshafts with higher
lift and longer-duration lobes (and variable valve timing on both shafts)
usher it into the cylinders, where the reinforced pistons, wrist pins, and
connecting rods await.
Do I need to prove this further?
