If you hit 170 on the oil temp, do a leak-down, better yet, do a
compression check.  The last 2 times I saw 170 in the respective cars,
one had compression of 75 across the board, the other had 60 across the
board.  The one I rebuilt had oil rings that were so brittle they
schrapneled just putting them down on a metal workbench.  Both cars ran
without codes, one went in and got top dollar for a trade-in.

I routinely put 25 row oil coolers in the front of S car radiators, and
have done a dozen or so of those.

IMO, past 150C is too hot, even with synthetic oil.
