If I'm concerned about fitment (stretch or squeeze), I always go direct to
the manufacturer's website. They always have a chart with tire sizes and
exact acceptable rim width ranges- Tire Rack only provides generalized
guidance, and the two rarely agree. From Sumitomo's site, the 265/40 ZR18 is
designed for a 9.5 inch wide rim, and should only be used on 9-10" wide
rims, so I wouldn't go there. The 255 is OK for 8.5, so that's the widest I
would go. The 10mm you're giving up is less .4 inches- I doubt you'll really
see much difference.
