that's right. i just looked at tire rack and the first few 17" wheels were all 17x8. poke around and you'll even find some 17x8.5 or 17x9.

Check Tire Rack. You have 73 different 17" wheels to choose from. 18s would be pretty harsh in the UrS, IMO. The OZ Ultraleggeras are always a nice choice... fairly reasonable cost, and weigh in at under 17lbs.
The Ebay crap often has only 7.5 inch options. I'd steer clear of the really cheap aftermarket stuff, as they tend to be very heavy (I've seen over 25lbs), are often out of round when new, and damage very easily. I balance a lot of tires for a lot of fellow Audi geeks, and those types of wheels are usually very poor.

I haven't seen any 17 inch wheels with greater than 7.5 inch width. Just the
places I've looked have only indicated 17 x 7.5.

huh? there are 17x8 wheels out there, and some of them even come on audis
(A6 4.2, A8, S6). i wouldn't get an 18x8 unless i needed the 18" to clear
some humongous brakes. larger diameter = more unsprung weight.

I looking at getting new wheels soon. I'm leaning towards 17 inch but the
tire of choice Sumimoto HRZ IIIs only fit an 8" width wheel which isn't a
17" size.
Should I move up to 18 just to fit the tire of choice? What is ride like?
Recall I have Eibach and Bilstein setup, so concerned about the lower
profile. Also Ottawa roads ain't that great.
