mileage might make a difference, too. does your father's car have a lot of miles?

a porsche shop told my friend that stretched head studs are common on 964s. the engine has to come out to replace the head studs, since it's a boxer configuration. that's where most of the labor cost came from. while it was out, he had the rings and bearings replaced. porsche parts are expensive, so he used some ARP parts instead. here's what he wrote in his email to me:

I'm trying to truly bulletproof it this time around so I never have to
go in there for this type of shit again. Although we found where the
car was leaking oil and that shit just leaks from there after time, no
matter what. But this type of major component shouldn't go "bad" in my
opinion. Porsche bulletproof motors, indeed. Just because it won't
throw a rod...if you have to pull the motor all the way out to change
stretched headstuds...that's not bulletproof to me. Basic rebuild
stuff:

1. Changing headstuds to ARP (ARP is cheaper than 993TT hardware that is also used as an upgrade)
2. Changing rod bolts to ARP
3. Changing all the rubber couplers for the intake
4. New rod bearings
5. Changing the seals under the bolts that hold the bottom case together
6. All new seals for every-freaking thing
7. New belts
8. New clutch slave cylinder

The heads were sent out to Terry Hunt Monday and he checked out the heads:

9. New intake valves recommended
10. New exhaust valves recommended because I track the car
11. New springs needed
12. New titanium retainers to be used
13. New valve guides
14. Valve job
15. Resurface the heads

I wouldn't say they are bad. My father has had one for around eight years now and it has been very reliable.

Early cars had oil leak issues at the base of cylinders and the original dual mass flywheels were a bit problematic as well. Distributor belts were more of an issue before the vent kits were added.
