Betsey: First of all, if you have been lurking for very long, I hope we (the manly men) didn't
embarrass ourselves too much with the typical banter. We don't realize that there are women folk
about, listening. <kidding> (Sort of)
Now on to your coil issue:
Coils die. The coils themselves aren't too bad but their wiring is getting brittle. In some cases, the
wiring cracks and arcs power to the cam cover, causing all sorts of issues (missing, etc). The solutions include:
1. Replacing the dead OE coils with new replacement (typically Beru) OE coils, at least $125 plus
labour each (probably one hour) per coil
2. Rewiring the existing OE coils and hoping it works (mostly labour, probably 3 to 4 hrs)
3. Replacing all the OE coils and power output stages with an Apikol 1.8t coilpack kit for $389:
https://www.apikol.com/#Products,Engine,21 (good for up to RS2 levels, no track use) (But still
some potential coil pack failures (not Apikol's fault)) (20 min DIY)
4.Replacing all the OE coils and power output stages with a coil near plug system that uses GM
Delphi D585 coils, from EFIexpress. $425 for the kit or less for the harness and source your own
coils: http://www.efiexpress.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=18
Hope that helps.
