You are probably correct, Jerry.
But, have you ever sourced the brush set and then replaced them in one
of these regulators? You must de-solder most of the connections on the
regulator to access the brush set, solder in the new brushes, and re-
assemble the regulator, hoping you haven't fried anything. At the $10,
$20, or $70 price for a new regulator, you probably wouldn't come out
ahead, and you can't hardly replace them roadside.
Usually by the time the alternator is ready for a brush set, it is
ready for
a clean-up and rear bearing, depending on service conditions.
