[s-cars] RS6

not to mention a lot cheaper. you can buy an LS7 crate engine, complete from intake to oil pan, for $13k, and it'll make 500 hp right out of the box. don't let the word "pushrod" fool you - this is a sophisticated engine, with titanium connecting rods and intake valves, dry sump, sodium-filled exhaust valves, etc.
all you have to do is eyeball an LS7 and a typical DOHC V8 or V10 (say the engine from an E39 or E60 M5) to see just how much more compact the LS7 is. the LS7 crate engine, with water pump, coils, engine mount brackets, Z06 exhaust manifolds, and clutch/flywheel, weighs 444 lbs. that's impressive for the kind of power it produces.

Well, maybe not quite- the C6 RS6 has 600hp, although it's not hard with
forced induction to make more with an LSx engine- stock ZR1 engine is 638hp
and building an LS3 with a blower can easily match that- twin turbo
conversion can do over 1000hp without any problem.
It's much easier to twin-turbo the Ultima with the "standard" engine rather
than doing a retarded engine swap. LSx series engines are probably some of
the most size-efficient engines for their power output and weight. Heck, I
can fit an LSx into my Miata, which I'd like to do.
