I have a little too much chrome on my 2004 Passat and I can already see
spots, Auto car washes with the chemicals are the devil. So been looking at
my options. Bought black out tape when I had my S6, just never got around to
installing it.
Patrick, you mentioned restore, so something along the lines of this:
http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp look for part number : 07500100002,
aluminum trim deoxidizer.
Just to give you a couple of other options...
There is plasti-dip in a spray can, yes it is removable ( my comments in
thread = Germanguy):

Another one I have been thinking about, black chrome anyone? They recently
came out with "smoke" : http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html
I have used their red on my old TSW Evos which had faded red center, nuts.
Came out nice. Guessing for window trim you might want to use their adhesion
promoter CP 199, clear primer and "...provides great adhesion when
painting plastic, fiberglass, bumpers and aluminum trim moulding."
Harold
Manchester, NHhis durable primer provides great adhesion when painting
