Hi Peter,
I know these things seem interminable when a couple of these come up,
but
it's rewarding to get past them knowing they should only occur once.
To give you what you asked for, I believe the one advertised by
RockAuto.com
is an all metal version.
Is there a reason beyond intuition that has you looking for an all
metal version?
I know yours failed, but it was also 17 years old. I am not sure the
all metal one
is better since the Audi part is aluminum with plastic ends and
outlets and some
good manufacturers are making them.
The all metal version is probably aluminum core with lead soldered
brass ends
and tubing making it more labor intensive and more likely to be
produced in the
Asian rim countries. The coolant is also targeted to protect mostly
aluminum
and not brass and lead.
Since you are far enough south to not use the heater a lot, I would
suggest that
a routine opening of the heater valve to circulate the coolant is
needed with
any core as a preventive maintenance procedure.
I think any of these are good depending on the shipping:

Did you know Bruce McGuire is closing his shop? Might be some deals
there.
