On the 1993 S4 you don't need to mess with the evaporator assembly to change
the heater core. Luckily (before space became a big concern) they are in
separate locations...evaporator is in the plenum in front of the passenger.

I don't know if the question still applies as I don't know how deep you are
diving into the heater/AC components.
