Tony,

You may want to try brake fluid.? Put some on the outside of the connection, protect it from touching the paint, wait some time, then tap the joint.? It has always worked for me (and its essentially free).

Mark near Chicago

Hi folks,

Went to replace the rear brake hoses on the S6 and it soon became clear the
hose didn't want to separate from the hard line. So I'm looking to replace
the connection of the hard line to hose which means I have to cut the line
and then flare the end. Any BTDT advice? Source for flare kits?

I've never done this before so any advice welcome.

Cheers,

Sounds like turbo bypass valve issues, BTDT [with a 200q20v, 3b engine]. Here's
info 3b related but essentially applies to AAN also.

Hey gang,

My S4 seems to have a new issue. My idle seems to stick between 1100
and 2000 rpm after extended high speed driving or when the AC is on.
If it just cruise around town it seems fine.

Problem is that the car likes to stumble and stall after coming to a
toll booth or off the freeway. It does restart but it is a real PITA
when in traffic. The ISV has been removed and cleaned and the car has
no trouble codes stored. Any ideas?

And...

If that treatment doesn't work there may be an open somewhere else in
the circuit. It can be VERY difficult to find such an open. There
is a pair of wires (the other ends of the wear sensor wires) which
inhabit one of the plugs in the back side of the instrument
cluster. Just open up the plug, locate the two wires join them
inside the plug (solder and black tape) and close the plug back up and..

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. ;-)

If you need to know exactly which wires and which plug just
ask. It's been a while since I did it so I'll hafta go digging to be
able to tell you for sure but I did this to my car when such an open
circuit occurred and it works beautifully.

Before you do that, have you tried soaking in Kroil for a day or two? Propane
torch?

Apparently it's not easy to get Kroil in Canada - maybe west coast. There's
also some stuff called Knock'r Loose which is supposed to be identical.
Can't find that either!

You could try a 50/50 mix of ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and acetone.

Hopefully you'll be able to get it loosened with some Kroil/PB
Blaster/etc, but if you do find yourself needing to replace the hard
line do yourself a favor and avoid the $25 flaring tools that everybody
sells. They're all the same and they all suck. Absolutely worthless on
steel lines. Good luck trying to get a good flare with them. Believe
me I've tried. Out of 10 tries you might get one or two passable
flares. The only thing I've found that does a good job is a hydraulic
flaring tool like this. Works every time.
http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-3494-mastercool-71475.aspx

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. You can find it for around
$280 if you hunt around. It's possible that Mastercool makes a kit that
is just for metric bubble flares so you don't have to pay for all the
extra dies you don't need, but I couldn't find one.

Now, if you are at the point where you will be replacing a significant
amount of line rather than just cutting off about a 1/2" and recrimping,
then get yourself some Cunifer copper-nickel line
(http://www.fedhillusa.com/). It's an absolute joy to work with, and
with this you may actually be able to get a decent flare with the cheapo
flaring tools. Though, unless you're replacing the entire section of
line, you'll still need to deal with flaring the steel line at some
point.
