I recently ran into someone who knew a member of the Shokan 'clan',
via another automotive community. The person claimed, and I have no
way to verify this, that everything magically came from cars with a
specific mileage on them if someone asked...I think it was 42k?

I've heard over the years a number of horror stories, including
someone who was clearly shipped the wrong part, shipped it back, and
was refused a refund because "you installed it", and others have been
told that they had returned a different part than what they got (ie,
"we sent you a working part and you're trying to get your money
back.")

I also will never forget calling them back around '94-'95 looking for
a used sun visor for The Car I Was Permitted The Use Of, and being
quoted a price nearly as high as the dealer was asking for a new one.

As for alternative parts sources:

That list receives updates and contributions from fellow list members.
There's a listing of companies on one page (ie just contact info and
bare facts), and it links to another page with all of the
recommendations/avoids (ie, the opinions.)
