I had a similar incident occur to me up in Maine ... while driving a Tornado
Red Audi 4000Q (mAC) with it's lights on in broad daylight on a wet road.
In reality, it was a two lane open highway, absolutely no intersections in
sight, and the "guy" (no idea who or what the driver was, it happened way
too fast) was slowing and pulling to the right, no turn indicators or
anything. I (perhaps foolishly) thought he was pulling off with no signal,
accelerated and intended to pass him on the left (the center line was
broken, and there was no oncoming traffic). JUST as I got along side of the
guys car (which was half on the shoulder, anticipating what ultimately
turned out to be a U-turn in front of an entire lane of traffic) the guy
abruptly turned left, fully into my lane. I was able to avoid him, but the
turn back to the right to stay on the pavement set up a wicked tank-slapper
at more than 70 MPH. I was able to stay on the gas (remember, it's all of
115HP in one of those old Q's) and get her back under control, but it took 4
cycles before she settled down. Needless to say the then GF and I were
pretty silent for a good 20 minutes afterwards. Had we hit, or had we spun
off into the woods (the road was tree lined) the results would've been
likely quite different. As for the other driver, this was before cell phones
and portable GPS devices, so this guy simply failed to check ANY of his
mirrors, and gee, a left turn signal and a slowing vehicle would've put me
on alert of a stupid maneuver, so that would've helped. Either that or he
just plain didn't care...
LL - NY still thankful and ever more alert.
