[s-cars] '94 UrS4 rear spring replacement

The clam-type spring compressor is what I've used on S cars for years. Not really clear on what the problem is. Procedure for rear spring replacement: Remove strut assembly (3 nuts top, 1 bolt/nut bottom). Put spring compressor/s on spring, remove top nut, and disassemble perch assemblies. Now remove spring compressor/s from spring. Install on new spring, and reassemble strut, remove spring compressor. Install upper mounting nuts. If orientation of new spring is not correct, insert screwdriver into lower mounting bushing and reorient by twisting in the direction of the lower spring spring stop. If the hole doesn't line up vertically (what I understand the problem is), you lower the control arm with a prybar until the bolt can go thru the lower bushing. It takes very little force to lower the control arm, you could do it by hand, assuming no rear sway bar...

I see no need to use a spring compressor on either front or rear suspension of any S car while in situ.

There are different styles of spring compressors out there. I got this one:

I haven't tried it on the UrS4 yet, though.

Other methods I've seen involve compressing the spring off the car, then using
hose clamps, cable, nylon rope, etc. to keep the spring compressed. After
installing the assembly, cut the rope, cable, etc. Use this method at your own
risk.

Anyone have any advice, or a written up procedure on replacement of the
rear springs?
I managed to get the assembly out, and mostly back in, but now can't get
the bottom bolt in.
I need to compress the strut, but I am really having trouble fitting the
spring compressors in there.

I have managed so far without removing anything other than the wheel and
the strut itself. Is there something else I should remove to find more
space?

Thanks for any help!
Duncan
