and Do NOT try to spread the slot in the strut housing to ease the release of the ball joint.

You will compromise the ball joint's connection to the strut.
..and hopefully you won't experience what my wife and kids did when the lower control arm freed itself from the ball joint while driving
(luckily at low speed in a parking lot)
...yes the car had the wrong pinch bolt which was also cross threaded, but I shudder to think what could have happened at speed on a bumpy road.
BTW, force was sufficient to also pull the outer CV off the halfshaft.
