[s-cars] front strut assembly removal

Bill,

in regards to the rear suspension:

1. Any time I've had rear suspension work on my S6 it "settled: lower" later
2. A common mistake is to install the spring perch upside down which raises the
rear end.

Don't know if that helps but hey it's what I have to offer ; - )

Chris

First off, Thanks to all who provided guidance regarding my recent
suspension R&R. I didn't realize just how worn the stuff was until I
took it out. It went fairly well: new Blausport damper, New S6 Plus
replica springs (GP), front tierods, control arms and brake lines. I
have a few follow-up questions. I don't have a Bentley manual, and need
the proper torque specs for the upper 22mm nut? Also, the rear sits a
bit high, could it be I need to sock the upper shock nut tighter to
compress the spring a bit more?

One more thing, if anyone wants to borrow it, I bought the special 22MM
strut Nut wrench, which provides access for the allen wrench, for
removing the front strut assemblies. Let me know.

Thanks,
Bill

and Do NOT try to spread the slot in the strut housing to ease the
release of the ball joint.

You will compromise the ball joint's connection to the strut.
..and hopefully you won't experience what my wife and kids did when the
lower control arm freed itself from the ball joint while driving
(luckily at low speed in a parking lot)
...yes the car had the wrong pinch bolt which was also cross threaded,
but I shudder to think what could have happened at speed on a bumpy
road.
BTW, force was sufficient to also pull the outer CV off the halfshaft.
