 Ben
I just reread the SAE article I referenced, before I put up a post on the topic. I'm pretty convinced that the electrode 'drop' is for a couple reasons... First, the platinum tips are resistance welded, Iridiums are laser welded. The platinum melting point is 700C less than Iridium/rhodium alloy. The side wear on the platinum is increased as both lean and rich cycles are higher (and I suspect in high boost apps, the massive difference between idle/cruise and WOT/full boost doesn't help).

I too could care less what a spark plug costs. Give me one that specifically address the application performance, it could cost double. And that F5D is not cheap, so that argument is moot anyhow.

My conclusion: It's Iridium and forget it. And the F5DPOR is a good plug.

Apparantly I got the bad end of the bell curve failure-wise on my NGKs. I did

hear good

things and what Scott said re. Iridium makes sense.\

Indeed I don't install enough plugs to have any statistical significance. I was

just

reporting my results.

Maybe I'll try them again.

You digress?

Anyway... like I said, experience seems to vary. I've dropped numerous

electrodes on

the Bosch plugs. Hap and Mike Pederson had similar experiences. After Hap had

one of

those incidents, I removed his turbo to find his turbine missing most of one

blade from

"passing" an electrode.

I've run the NGKs in my UrS at 30psi, as well as in my stage 3 '01 S4 with no

trouble at

all.

Cost was never an object for me... I just wanted a plug that wouldn't come

apart.

Dave,

I digress. I have never had a Bosch failure - the recommended F5DPOR plugs go

for the

duration and get replaced as a matter of course.

The NGK plugs on the other hand - several were pretty much DOA causing me a

real

troubleshooting nightmare. I put the 100kmile Bosch back in place of the

defective NGK

and engine runs fine at over 3 Bar.

The NGK weren't that cheap either.

Go figure.

yeah, it is a dead horse, and seems to be personal preference. Me... I will

never

install a Bosch plug in one of my cars again, not when there is an NGK

alternative.

I've dropped one too many Bosch electrodes into the cylinder on high boost

applications.
