[s-cars] Driveline noise/vibration

Thanks for the replies, all. I will check the front CV before assuming the center bearing is at fault. Any exterior evidence to look for, or will I need to remove the boot to inspect? If so, I should then just prepare to at least regrease and reboot to get through the holidays? If I remember correctly, the exhaust comes off, then the heat shield to get to the CV joint. If I go that far, should I just replace it altogether?
Will I do much more damage (Catostrophic driveline failure?) if I continue to drive the car? I'm sure the vibration isn't good for the rest of it. My driving is mostly highway, and doesn't seem to vibrate at speeds over 15-20mph.
Thanks again everyone. Gotta love the list!

Based on your comments, I'm beginning to agree with the "dry front joint" theory. Why it would make the noise in only forward motion? 'Cause that's the way the car is driven the vast majority of the time. A dry joint would begin to wear the steel balls in the joint, as well as the surface they travel in... developing some play. The tinging noise is that slack, the clatter of metal on metal, and the vibration is traveling down the entire shaft... sort of a tuning fork effect.
I saw exactly that on a very well used 4000q a few years back. Bone dry... and had obviously been quite hot from lack of lubrication. It was actually salvageable with a new boot and repacking with grease.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the responses so far.....
Took a quick look underneath the car while canging the oil today and couldn't
see anything all that obvious. I did notice that the "ting ting ting" does not
happen in reverse, only in forward gears, and with just easing the clutch into
first without any gas being applied. Seems to be coming from just under the
front doors. Any thoughts on why it wouldn't happen in reverse, and does this
information lead me in one particular direction as to the cause?
Many thanks in advance.
