Quick story that might be of help/interest to somebody else...
About a month or two ago on QW, Dave Forgie tossed out a link to some of the
Freescale 3bar MAP's floating around, and I ordered a bunch of the
side-ported ones right away. Unfortunately I wuz working (work FTL) and
traveling and holidaze BS and etc wtf BS etc. excuses. Well I've finally
had the time to get one installed and matched up with a MTM 1+ clone
chipset.
I got the MAP fab'd and installed a couple days ago, but hadn't gotten the
1+ chips installed right away... install was eazy peazy after doing a quick
fab with a little chip of double sided copper PCB board (I didn't etch, just
hand scored the pads for the 3 contacts on the MAP that do anything - the
others are all "N/C" - no connection). I had to move the car before I had
the 1+ chips in hand and carefully drove it a bit on my old TAP Stage 1 chip
(studiously avoiding WOT of course), and it worked great right away, scaling
boost higher and faster of course than the 2.5 OEM MAP. But I didn't want
to ping my motor to an early death so really couldn't drive it at all until
I finally got the MTM 1+ in tonight. Bam all works as expected including
the classic MTM 1+ "brick wall" boost curve.
Bottom line: I know others have used the Freescale for RS2 and other mods
but I want to toss out another strong vote to the Freescale device for
awesome cheap performance buy of the year. I'll post pics up on QW a little
later tonight as it's easier to link pics etc. there so have a cruise over
if you're interested. The Freescale plus a clone / cheap / used "Stage 1+ or
2 or whatever you call it" chipset has got to be the cheapest path to great
fun I've had in a long time. The cost of the VMAP or Bosch 3bar always
seemed like overkill for a little "baby step" like a Stage 1+/2 and the
Freescale changes all that. $10 or whatever, basically immaterial... (guess
that's why it's "FREEscale"!)
Bad news is that the semi-monster boost (for an OEM turbo/mani at least) is
showing up the weakness on my coils again. Classic misfire stumble when I
stomp it hard (what? they don't like 2bar? pussy-ass coils)... F bad OEM
coils. Yes my fault for being a cheap bastard and trying to get away with
somebody elses used OEM ones (hey I have to save my real car money for the
M-car what can I say...) So crap now a cheap fix is going to cost me more
money... but only what I shoulda done in the first place...
Still havin' fun tho. :^)
