[s-cars] A8 tranny problem?

A friend has found a 97/98? A8 with its tranny stuck in 5th gear. He's
wondering if it's really a tranny issue or whether it's a problem in
some controller.
If the latter, will VAG-COM show which? He's interested in the car but
not if it's going to cost thousands to fix.

Any knowledge here?
