[s-cars] A8 tranny problem?

Oh geez, just because I'm the only person here dumb enough to
disassemble one of these things and lucky enough to have it work again
now I'm the expert? Ok, ok, I guess I'm the next best thing.

Diagnosing should be cake with a VAG-Com. Codes come first. Then you
can use the measuring blocks to view the output of the ECU which
includes gear selector position and ECU requested gear. Then you can
check the solenoids with the output tests.

There's a switch on the side of the transmission that tends to fail
and cause plenty of issues. It's output can be viewed on the measuring
blocks.

Internally it seems complicated, but it's fairly simple in reality.
Most internal failures will result in a lack of movement rather then
being stuck in one gear. If one valve or solenoid is stuck then the
trans would lock itself up when it tried to select another gear.
Failed or worn clutches, or a stuck pressure relief valve (like mine)
will result in no movement.
