I love the little 1.8t-2.0t motor family. we just closed on a 2008 A3 with
the 2.0t FSI for the wife yesterday.
given the huge numbers of cars these ended up at this point and the number
I"ve either owned, or had friends/family in, those few sludging engines seem
to be the exception. I always wonder if it's related to the mfrs modern
super long oil service intervals and if people did the old school routine
that my 4kcsq had with something like 2 changes within first 2k miles then
regular 2-3k mile changes if it'd ever be a problem. the stupid coil
failures seem to be the biggest potential inconvience issue, and I really
prefer it driving-wise over the 2.8 with a manual. few other little picky
issues like the BPV or DV or whatever they want to call it always seems to
fail but you just replace that with either a cheap new one or a nice metal
Forge or whatever... I hear there's MAF issues on some cars, but I have a
dozen close friends or family with these engines who never had a significant
problems.
of course for a 1.8t or 2.0t a nice conservative Stage I chip is a must,
like an UrS car ot leaves the car completely stock driveable and dependable
but better in all ways. :^)
the boring 2.8 AHA motor obviously has better torque and so better for a
CrapTronic transmission, but IMO it's kind of an anti-Beemer/anti-Alfa motor
- aka no driving joy comes just from operating the engine and hearing it
rev, it's a utilitarian power production appliance. I used to drive a
friends A4Q with a 30v2.8 manual and somehow just never as enjoyable as
driving my own chipped 1.8t. as I've posted here before, I did up an AHA
2.8 in my C5 with a PES blower kit and that did wonders for it but it still
didn't have much personality. however they do seem to be reliable enough so
if it's practicality you're looking for they certainly work and if you found
an otherwise mint specimen with that motor it shouldn't be a deal breaker...

Ha! Ya got me there.
I am actually not leaning 2.8 or 1.8 - any comments? I would think the 30v
2.8 should be peppy enough.
I know the 1.8 in the Jetta has oiling problems. I don't know if its the
same for the A4 application. A history of synthetic oil use seems important
with the 1.8.
