There were some options I looked at briefly as far as replacing the head
unit, but I didn't really find any that fit the bill as far as doing what I
wanted and fitting in the car nicely.  Like the Pioneer AVIC-X910BT which
does navigation, USB and SD, but does not do Ogg format music.

If you really must spend an order of magnitude more, something like that
will do it.  :-)

If you want to spend a couple of orders of magnitude more than the Gateway
300, get the 2010 Golf.

Those seem like reasonable alternatives to me.  ;-)

Also note that SD is going to limit you to 32GB -- that's the size USB
stick that I started off with.  I nearly got a 64GB, and could have gotten
128GB.  If 32GB fits you well, or you are ok with swapping cards (I'd
prefer to just have everything in one), then that's a great option.

Either way, I agree with avoiding the iPod.  Lots of people want that
option though, mine definitely does not have that capability any more.  I
could add it with an extra cable for the Gateway, but I had no interest in
it at the time.
