Thanks Mike and Jim.  I had hoped my independent shop would do this check,
but they kind of blew me off.  First they said they couldn't reproduce it,
then they did reproduce it but apparently weren't interested in keeping it
to reproduce it again.  Checking the starter voltage was the first thing I
would have checked.

Almost makes me want to jack up the car and hook up a volt meter to it.
Almost.  2 decades ago when I had less money and more time I was diagnosing
a starter problem on my RX-7 ('84 GSL-SE) and got to the point where I
could do a swap in 15 minutes.  That was in the summer, today it's, uh,
-2F at the moment here.

I guess now I get to see if the starter is a $200-ish part, or is made of
unobtanium alloy.  :-)
