[s-cars] Synthetic oil weight rec's

Well, a couple of things. I used to be a Syntec 5W50 super fan. Had it in my urq
when it got hydro-locked in flash flood in New Orleans. Pushed the car to high
ground, pulled the plugs and cranked it to blow out the water. Buttoned it up and
got it started and drove it across the Causeway, with it eventually blowing all the
water out of the exhaust system. The result was that there didn't seem to be
anything detrimental to the engine from the experience and, while another syn oil
might have done as well, I was sold on it. But, then, I thought Castrol went
'funny' syn; the color changed and it just wasn't the same.

I thought Mobil 1 had gone the same path, but returned to fully synthetic last year,
so I now have the 15w50 in both urq and S6. Plans, however, are to stock up on
Amsoil, but not with the 100% Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil
(http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx) they recommend (which I will run in the
A4's) but the SAE 20W-50 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil
(http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aro.aspx), which from the title may not be 100%
synthetic anymore.

Also considered what some other listers have been using, Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel
& Marine Motor Oil SAE 15W-40 (AME) (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx).

Would be interesting to know who is/isn't fully syn anymore...and how the definition
has changed.

Steve

>Not to start a "brand" debate, but I'm a typical Castrol 20W-50 user, and would
appreciate rec's on what weight full synthetic to use since I'm not finding
anything. Is Rotella 15W40 a wise choice (dino) or should I move over to Mobil 1
15W-50? (sucks that it's not sold in 5q jugs but oh well).
