[s-cars] Synthetic oil weight rec's

Thanks Taka.
I'm wondering where are you getting your Mobil 5W40. I'm finding most of the FLAPS
around here don't carry the oils I want. They sell Rotella at SAMS club, but nothing is
labled at Synthetic. I'm not finding Syntec 5W50 many places anymore - expecially in
the gallon containers. Some of the oils I'd like to buy like Royal Pruple are way too
expensive.
I have been using ELF 5W40 synthetic that I get from a friend who owns a local
service shop here in Annapolis. I have been happy with this oil.
If I need more Viscocity for the older I5's I'll add some 50W Diesall or similar.
I agree with that several leading bran Conventional Oils being so good now it is often
not worth the extra for synth. I'll often simply use the Castrol 10W40 or 5W50 I have
used for years in most of my cars with no problem. Just need to change a little more
frequently.

I just bought some Mobil 1 5W40 turbodiesel truck oil to use for my V70R- last time I
checked, this oil had the best flash point and pour temps of any of the Mobil 1
synthetics and it's 20% more than the regular Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart. Since my car calls
for 5W30, that's what I'm going to use.
For your car, Wylie, I'd suggest the same and see how you do, oil consumption wise,
because most of the I-5 cars don't like lighter oils.
For a Shell product, I'd look to Rotella synthetic 5W40. Excellent oil- that's what we
use in our turbodiesel truck fleet.
Also, for a real answer, you need to do oil analysis to see how your car is doing with a
particular oil.

s-hedz,
Not to start a "brand" debate, but I'm a typical Castrol 20W-50 user, and would
appreciate rec's on what weight full synthetic to use since I'm not finding anything. Is
Rotella 15W40 a wise choice (dino) or should I move over to Mobil 1 15W-50? (sucks that
it's not sold in 5q jugs but oh well).
