...I will try and get a c-clamp on to retract the pistons using the bleeder
valve trick, I was dismayed when I was not able to use the retractor tool
that I use for the rear brakes.  I tried removing the cap on the master
cylinder and using a quick grip type clamp, but I could not move the fluid
back through the lines with that level of force.

The pistons should not require a lot of force to move.  I generally use a flat 
bladed screwdriver between the pad and rotor and pry slowly.  Maybe you have  
really stuck pistons.  If you decide to take apart the caliper by blowing out the 
pistons using compressed air be very careful.  Stuff a rag between the pistons.
When they come out it will sound like a gunshot and have a lot of force.
