[s-cars] Squealing chipmunks (in dash vent)

While you're sensor is likely clogged nicely with years of cabin lint and my
benefit from a cleaning, I don't think spraying anything into will help your
cause. The small dash vent is 1-2" deep well containing a temp sensor. At
the bottom it has a 90* connection and another short connection hose to a
small suction motor, the idea being to suck all the dust from that 3" area
on your dash... Err I mean to suck cabin temp air across the temp sensor.

The well/dash (5/8) grate are secured to the underside of the dash. The
motor (9) is secured to a metal bracket with a Philips (18). With a stubby
or a mall 90* ratcheting screwdriver you can undo the motor from the bracket
and remove it with hose (12). I don't recall seeing hose (11) in my
personal cars, but doesn't mean it isn't in yours. So yes, it is completely
possible to remove/reinstall the motor if you remove your cluster and work
from that opening... However, be prepared to feel like a one handed blind
proctologist, as getting a hand and eyes in there, or two hands at the same
time is nigh impossible.
Having said all that, I doubt the small suction noise is your issue but more
likely it is your main blower. I suppose you could confirm this by
unplugging the main blower 2 pin power from the plenum, and drive around or
whatever to replicate sound. This way if is there it isn't the main blower.
And without the main blower howling away, you might be able to better locate
the source of the noise.
However, it likely is the blower, and you can resign yourself to turning up
the radio or replacing the blower via using any number of shortcuts from the
factory method, depending on time and willingness to hack your airbox. If
you replace the blower, you can consider a touch of lube on the rubber fan
isolators to help prevent them from squeaking against the inside of the
airbox. Just make sure you reseal the airbox to the firewall well, as you
don't want to open a path into the cabin for rain/car wash run off.

Hi Y'all,
My urS6 has started to develop an annoying squeal which sounds like it comes
from the little cabin air temperature sensor under the little grille to the
right center of the dash. The chipmunks go to sleep if I stop the HVAC
blower. I suspect that if I could get some decent lubrication in there that
my problem would be solved.
So what's the trick? Just spray some Kroil into the grille opening and hope
it gets to where it needs to be? Or pull the entire dash to get to the
chipmunk nest? Or?
Bob
