[s-cars] climate control issues

Less urgent.... but is a perfectly normal CC unit supposed to be incredibly
difficult and ornery to live with and operate? I have no previous experience
with any other than the one that came with my 95 S6 but this thing has a
mind of its own....like it will give me heat to my feet whenever asked, but
I cannot get it to respond to the central position, and sometimes it refuses
to defrost the windshield, sometimes it won't go into auto and other
times it won't go out of auto, and other times I cannot get it to lower
the speed or temp when I return to my car after work when its 70deg
inside but I had the heat on in the morning when it was sub 40deg,
so upon start up it blasts heat at high speed for 20min when its already hot in the car....
I've purchased a used CC unit as a backup.....should I be swapping
it out and stop putting up with this stubborn unit that i have or is this
thing trying to operate as intendedc thinking it knows best....seriously,
most of the function it allows me to perform it does so grudgingly,
do I get a new CC unit or an exorcism?
(above description may contain slight exaggerations - slight)

The CC heads are functionally interchangeable. The only real
difference is the later ones have a redder display- early are more
orange.
You can do fault detection through either the head or VAG-COM. You
will need V-C to clear the codes.
It sounds like you need a new blower motor in addition to cleaning the
flap motors, but you should be able to find out the cause once you
have a good CC head installed.
