If the problem is just some displays or buttons not illuminating properly,
then it's just a matter of replacing some lamps.

If the buttons are ignoring you unless you press them really hard, then they
are either in need of cleaning, or maybe the circuit board has moved away
from the front panel slightly. The plastic tabs that keep the circuit board
pressed against the front panel are very fragile, and if they break, then
you find the buttons become intermittent. I fixed the problem on one of mine
by taping (using electricians insulating tape) the circuit board to the
front panel, reinforcing the partially broken plastic tabs.

The CC heads have a reputation for rarely failing, whereas the flap motors
only last about seven or eight years before they start giving trouble.
There's plenty of information on the Internet on reconditioning the flap
motors:

The only electronic failure of a CC head I have come across is the regulator
frying because of a long-term short circuit of one of the flap motors.

So my '93 S4's climate control is now fully whacked and needs some work.
For several months now, the CC head (with temp display side burned out) will
indicate that the fan is on full blow, but no blow is going. For the same
several months my ingenious solution has been to open the drivers door and
give it a more agressive than normal close......OK I've been slamming it.
This has broken the fan free of whatever is stalling it, and all is blowy.
Now, this highly scientific resolution has failed also, so it's time to do
something as winter is still going in my world. The CC head unit
diagnostics are not accessible to me via the standard/understood method, so
I don't exactly know what is up. I do know that the flap controls for air
distribution have been wonky since I bought the car in '01, and I've just
lived with it. So now it seems I'll need a new blower motor as well as
whatever other flap motors are non-func.

Questions: Are the climate control diagnostics only available through the
CC head, or can vagcom get me there? If I take the CC head out of my '95.5
S6, will all diagnostic functions be equal between the '93 and '95 CC head?
If so, I should be able to figure out the problem(s) no? Then of course I'm
going to need some instructions, (and part numbers?) from some kind
soul that has been in this nether-region of the dash.

As always, any help appreciated.

'93 S4 w/o fan or flaps or CC diagnostics but with 244k dontcha know
'95.5 S6A w/ all functions intact (for now)
