I don't have personal experience with this, but running another or  
cleaning the wire running from the valve cover to the engine  
compartment. Supposedly that ground gets weak and causes some wierd  
issues. The PO of the new to me avant ran TWO such wires. And he's a  
certified audi/vw tech.

Bring a switch and change it anyway, Bill. Easy and cheap. 3 years is  
pretty good for a wet, mucky environment like Cos Cob, CT. (I don't  
miss the traffic either)

But personally, it might be nothing more than a dirty idle speed  
control motor.
