It's been a while, but I think last time I did it I used an air  
hammer. Thread the nut 75% of the way on to hold the hammer point from  
falling off of the end of the stud, to keep the thing from flying when  
it breaks loose, and also to protect the threads. That's how I tend to  
do tie rod ends anyway, I don't recall if there's enough space.
