[s-cars] A/C Recharging and Recirculation question

Bill,

Sorry, I can't answer your questions until I know what vehicle you are
asking about.

If the questions are a good measure of your system knowledge, then
proper recharging of the a/c system
may be more difficult than you think. Why you need to perform the
items you are asking about may
impact how to do the job also.

If I just guess for now that it is some model of URS4/6 audi, the air
inlet is below the plenum cover
between the engine and windscreen. Unsnap it at the front and slide
it out from the air screen below
the wipers and the inlet is at the back of the plastic box on the
right side (evaporator coil box). If you
haven't been here, the plenum and a/c inlet are probably full of
trash. The drains are necessary items
and must be kept clean or disaster will strike when water floods your
electronics. You can't clean much
of the coils unless you remove the wiper arms and the louvered screen
below it. Then there is an access
cover to let you get to the coil. You will need to access the coils
inside the cabin as well, below the
glove box. Removing the box will make this much easier, along with
the plastic foot duct. Then the recirc
door will give you access to the coil from below. Protect the carpet
with cloths if you are introducing
much liquid since the drain may be clogged. You will probably need a
small hose for the vacuum
to clean out much of the loosened junk.

If your carpets also smell a little or are dirty, a stanley steemer
job is called for if you are going to get a
fresh smelling car. You are probably going to make a mess as well, so
plan on a cleanup job.
Hopefully they haven't been getting wet and you don't get them soaked
either.

Let me say this again, the Motronic electronic control unit or ECU is
under a plastic cover below the
carpet where you are working. It will not work if you get it wet.
If it does not work, your car will not work.
