Thanks Tom.
Good for future reference. Although my Mom's car has definitely undergone
that "rough" service history described in the page (Mom does do regular oil
changes, but the car rarely gets up to proper temp under her use. It takes
my monthly visit or so to push it up to operating temp), it hasn't begun to
show signs of the leaks yet. Looks like this summer it's time for me to go
through the breather system to make sure it's clear. Considering the car
only has 33K miles on it, I'd be willing to bet it has a bit of
arterialsclerosis
As for the problem, it appears that some rodent or other started to use the
top of the engine as a storage (possibly heating/roasting) facility for
their winter meals. Cleaned most of it up, and the smell has (mostly)
abated. I'm wonderin if it's okay to leave the top "trim" cover off (it's
just there for looks/noise, correct?) to make the area more open/less
inviting and to make monitoring and clean up a bit simpler.
Thanks for all of the help so far.
