If it helps at all, I had to pop the passenger side ball joint the other weekend to replace a torn outer CV boot.
Upon reinstallation, I also had trouble with the ball join pinch bolt not easily going through the pinch slot on the strut upright.
Not wanting to damage the bolt thread by tapping it in with a hammer, I levered the same pry bar I used to pop the joint to relieve some pressure and inserted the pinch bolt fully.
I'll leave the rest of the description for the remedial class with a sex therapist.
